Elephanta caves
The Elephanta caves are a collection of cave temples that have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Elephanta caves is on Elephanta island which is connected to Mumbai with ferry services from the gateway of India. The journey from gateway of India to Elephanta caves takes approximately one hour. During your journy to the caves you can expect to see beautiful birds out in search of food.It contains five Hindu caves and few Buddha caves. Elephanta caves contain stone sculptures cut from rock perticularly in high relief.
Cave 1. Also known as main cave has Trimurti. It is the great sculpture in the cave. A three headed Shiva is detected in the image.
Ardhanarisvara, a half- Shiva , half- Parvati composite is located on the left side f Trimurti Shiva. It symbolises the ancient Hindu concept of the fundamental interdependence of the feminine and the masculine in the creation, maintenance and distribution of the universe.
A set of steps leads to inside of the cells from the floor. A linga occupies the centre of the image a top a raised platform.
Next to the North entrance, on the east side on the Partico is a panel depicting Shiva in yoga. Shiva in this form call Yogeshwara.
👉Cave 2 was completely destroyed at the front and restored with fore square pillars.
👉Cave 3 is besides cave 2. The portico has six pillars and a pillared mandapa.
👉Cave 4 is quite damaged as the all columns on its verandah are missing.
👉Cave 5 is incomplete and in damaged state with no artistic remains.
👉Cave 6 and 7 are located approximately 200 meters northeast of cave 1 and 2.
When you go to Elephanta island must visit the Cannon hill . The name cannon hill comes from the huge cannon at the top of the hill. These cannon were capable of rotating 360 degree.
